JVH Fly Reels were made in a wide range of reel quality from ones of German silver metal and hard rubber to those of nickel plated brass. Fly reels and salmon reels were popular Julius vom Hofe products. The earliest German silver and hard rubber fly reels were raised pillar designs and had squared off pillar corners. Later models had rounded corners. A common patent date seen on JVH fly reels is the Oct. 8, 1889 patent. It was for the adjustable rear bearing cap to take out the end play of the spool due to temperature or wear. It was an update to the Jan. 17, 1882 patent that also included this feature.
