The open mouth helped the top water bait create a splashing effect when pulled through the water. Most Clevenger lures have a metal spinner tail. Some have a leather tail. These lures are considered scarce by collectors. He died at the age of 54 in 1959. His lures are considered one of the great lures by Tampa Bay Area makers.
