Pflueger Enterprise Mfg Reels – Akron, OH

Pflueger Enterprise Mfg reels were made for a long time. The Enterprise Manufacturing Company was first established in 1881 and incorporated in 1886. Pflueger (Enterprise Mfg. Co.) made reels starting in 1901 and up until the present day. Joseph E. Pflueger received their first patent on February 10, 1903. The patent was for the two reel end plates having an aluminum plate sandwiched between two hard rubber plates. This feature was later incorporated into their Avalon reel. The first model Pflueger Supreme is perhaps the most interesting of the long line of Pflueger fishing reels. It had an automatic free-spool and an adjustable anti-backlash. Each reel was serialized. The reel feature that is really innovative are the little flippers at the ends for putting the line into the top of the level wind. As the level wind is traversing during the line retrieve, it pushes the line into the flippers. The older, high quality reels are sought after by collectors. The later level wind models were mass produced and are quite common among collectors. Pflueger made a wide range of reels from inexpensive nickel plated brass to solid nickel silver (German silver) models like the Redifor and the Worth reels. Prior to this, Pflueger made German silver casting reels with names like Beaver and Norka. These reels are recognized as Pflueger products by their characteristic handles and click and drag buttons.

Probably the most aesthetically pleasing reel is the Golden West fly reel. The end plates that are made up of an aluminum plate sandwiched between the two hard rubber plates makes a beautiful, yet structurally sound, design. Pflueger used the sandwich plate design on other reels including large salt water reels. The Avalon and Sea King are two of the most popular among collectors. Other large reels included the Adams, Atlapac, Templar and Interocean models. The Adams was introduced to try and compete with the Edward vom Hofe line of high quality reels. Pflueger Enterprise Mfg reels are considered to be made by one of the great early reel makers in the USA.
